We assemble public records that are scattered across state agency portals into single, documented files. Then we give them away. Download what you need, build what you want, credit the source.
What we will and will not publish
Public records and public domain sources
State agency feeds whose terms allow reuse, and federal public domain data such as the USGS place name, hydrography and streamflow files. We check the licence on a source before we ingest it, and we name that licence next to the download.
Never third party content we only licensed to display
Our business directory, the photos on it and the map data behind it come from commercial providers under terms that permit showing them here and nothing more. None of that is in these files and none of it ever will be. Neither is anything about a person.
Some excellent public data is missing from these files on purpose. A few states publish superb fisheries records under a written ban on commercial use, and the largest open map of the outdoors is share-alike, which a permissive release cannot carry. We leave those out and say so rather than publish them and hope. If you work for an agency and would like your records included, we would rather ask you than scrape you. Using the data
Everything here is released under a Creative Commons Attribution licence. In practice that means you can put it in a story, a paper, a class, a model or a product you charge for, and the only thing we ask is a credit with a link. Each dataset page carries a ready made citation line and a machine readable Frictionless descriptor, so most data tooling can read a release without any of these pages.
