How it works

How the fishing times are worked out

  1. 1

    Pick your spot

Search a lake, river or town, or use your location. The tool works in that spot's own time zone.

  2. 2

    Read the periods

Major periods center on the moon overhead and underfoot, minor periods on moonrise and moonset. A day rating comes from the moon phase.

  3. 3

    Plan the week

Step through the days or read the week ahead in one table, then share the link with whoever is coming.

Sun and moon times are computed in your browser and checked against the US Naval Observatory.

Common questions

Fishing times questions

Search for the lake, river or town you are fishing and the tool lists that day's major and minor solunar periods for that exact spot, in its own time zone, along with sunrise, sunset and the moon. Step through the week to plan a trip.

A solunar table lists the times of day when the moon's position is thought to make fish and game most active. Major periods are the roughly two hours around the moon passing directly overhead and directly underfoot. Minor periods are the roughly one hour around moonrise and moonset.

Solunar theory rates the days nearest a new or full moon highest, and the tool marks each day from Poor to Excellent on that basis. Treat it as one input. Weather fronts, water temperature, clarity and pressure often matter more on a given day.

Tables built for a region or a reference city can be several minutes off for where you actually stand, because the moon and sun cross each spot at a different time. This tool works the times out for the exact point you choose. Its sun and moon times are checked against the US Naval Observatory's published tables.
