  We couldn't have asked for a better first fly-fishing lesson for our 12-year-old son with Mike Rennie of Blue Mountain Drift Fly Fishing. Mike's communication was excellent from the start, when we were scheduling via email and text. His friendly, welcoming demeanor in person was greatly appreciated and set the stage for a great time. Mike's deep knowledge, passion, and experience were evident as he patiently taught our son the fundamentals of casting, gave him tips, and answered questions. His positive and encouraging instruction made the entire experience enjoyable and rewarding from start to finish. Mike is truly an outstanding instructor who knows how to connect with anglers of all ages, but we were particularly impressed by how he engaged with our son. By the end of the lesson, our son had not only grasped the technical skills required but also gained the confidence to take his passion further. We are incredibly grateful to have an angler of Mike's caliber nearby, and we would recommend him to anyone interested in fly-fishing instruction or guided services. Thank you, Mike, for this wonderful experience! We look forward to working with you on a guided trip in the near future.

  Been fishing my whole life but this might honestly be the best day of fishing I’ve ever had. Mike got my technique down as I’ve not fished with a guide before. By the end of the trip I was 5x the fly fisherman I was when I started. Mike really knows his stuff and he was extremely patient and informative. We will be back! This guy will put you on some fish.

  If I could I’d leave Mike a 4.9 review I would because I didn’t catch a 10lb smallmouth and he forgot to bring dessert. For being a life long angler, fishing across the globe, consistently placing in tournaments, having walls covered with citations you would think there wouldn’t be much more desired to achieve and learn and that’s why fishing is fishing. There’s always room to grow and learn. Chasing native smallmouth in the rivers of my home state of Virginia has been calling to me for years. After several failed attempts to fish the rivers unassisted a good friend of mine suggested we treat ourselves to a late Father’s Day float trip with Capt. Mike Rennie. It was indeed a treat filled with many lessons, wonderful natural scenery and the joy and thrill you feel when you get on a water ride at Busch gardens. The conditions were critical and for us to get quality catches our fishing had to be executed to precise technical detail. Naturally fly fishing isn’t my first choice but when in Rome I started the day doing what captain suggested. I thought I knew how to throw a fly rod I didn’t know I threw one like I was chopping down a tree. With Capt Mike coaching me I started to understand the nuances and left with a greater appreciation for the buggy whip. When I was able to do exactly what Mike wanted me to do, everything fell into place and I left the river with novelty quality catches. This was a once in a lifetime experience overall and at the end of the day I felt like I was fishing with a buddy and not a guide. Cheers Captain Mike! Pay da man!!

  I decided to take my father fishing for an early Father’s Day gift. We were originally supposed to fish for small mouth but since Mike is so knowledgeable about fishing across the region he suggested we go for striper instead. BOY was he right. My father was slamming striper all morning long. I’m a pretty trash fisherwoman and Mike even had me pulling in a bunch of big ones. It’s so good to have such a knowledgeable guide who knows where the fish are from one side of Virginia to the other. Mike really is a hidden jewel on Virginia’s waterways.
