About California

Over 1,100 miles of coastline on one side, the Sierra Nevada on the other, and a sprawl of rivers, lakes, and reservoirs in between, California asks only what kind of fishing you want. Guided trips run the full spread: tuna offshore from San Diego, wild trout on a fly rod in the Eastern Sierra, striped bass in the maze of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Few states can put that much different water on one license.

The freshwater map alone could fill a season. High-altitude Sierra lakes and rivers (the Truckee, the Owens), carry a reputation among fly anglers for wild trout. Down in the Central Valley, the Sacramento River and its tributaries host serious runs of salmon and steelhead, while big reservoirs like Clear Lake and Lake Shasta have earned legend status among bass anglers. The Delta is its own puzzle: a tangle of waterways where guides target sturgeon, bass, and panfish, and where local knowledge pays off fast.

Salt water raises the stakes. Southern California's offshore fleet chases Yellowfin Tuna, Bluefin Tuna, Dorado, and Yellowtail, running to the Channel Islands and beyond when the fish demand it. Closer in, bay and nearshore guides work San Francisco Bay, Monterey Bay, and the kelp forests off Orange County for California Halibut, Calico Bass, Rockfish, and Lingcod. Whatever your appetite for open ocean, there's a charter sized to it.

A guide earns their fee in California by cutting through complexity, the ecosystems are varied and the regulations are famously intricate.   • California Fishing License

    All individuals 16 years of age or older must purchase and possess a valid California sport fishing license to fish in any public waters. This license is required for both residents and non-residents, whether fishing independently or with a guide. Different licenses are available for specific durations, such as annual, one-day, or two-day options.

  • Report Cards and Stamps

    In addition to a basic fishing license, anglers pursuing steelhead or sturgeon (statewide), salmon in the Klamath, Trinity, and Smith river basins, or abalone (when open) must also obtain and possess the appropriate report card. An Ocean Enhancement Stamp is required for saltwater fishing in ocean waters south of Point Arguello, Santa Barbara County. These are separate purchases and must be presented upon request.

  • Barbless Hooks for Anadromous Fish

    Regulations often require the use of barbless hooks when fishing for anadromous species such as salmon and steelhead in specific rivers and at certain times of the year.   • Youth Fishing License

    Children under 16 years of age are not required to purchase a sport fishing license in California. However, they must still adhere to all other fishing regulations, including bag and size limits, and any report card requirements for specific species if applicable to their catch.

Yes. Every angler 16 or older needs a valid California sport fishing license, even aboard a licensed guide's boat or charter. Some species also require a report card or stamp on top of the license, those are separate purchases.
02What's the difference between freshwater and saltwater guides?
Different water, different craft. Freshwater guides work rivers, lakes, and reservoirs for trout, bass, salmon, steelhead, and sturgeon. Saltwater guides run the ocean, bays, and estuaries for tuna, yellowtail, halibut, rockfish, and striped bass. The expertise and equipment don't overlap much.
