  All individuals 16 years of age or older must purchase and possess a valid California sport fishing license to fish in any public waters. This license is required for both residents and non-residents, whether fishing independently or with a guide. Different licenses are available for specific durations, such as annual, one-day, or two-day options.

• Report Cards and Stamps

  In addition to a basic fishing license, anglers pursuing steelhead or sturgeon (statewide), salmon in the Klamath, Trinity, and Smith river basins, or abalone (when open) must also obtain and possess the appropriate report card. An Ocean Enhancement Stamp is required for saltwater fishing in ocean waters south of Point Arguello, Santa Barbara County. These are separate purchases and must be presented upon request.

• Barbless Hooks for Anadromous Fish

  Regulations often require the use of barbless hooks when fishing for anadromous species such as salmon and steelhead in specific rivers and at certain times of the year. • Youth Fishing License

  Children under 16 years of age are not required to purchase a sport fishing license in California. However, they must still adhere to all other fishing regulations, including bag and size limits, and any report card requirements for specific species if applicable to their catch.

   Buy your California sport fishing license, plus any report cards or stamps your trip requires, before departure day. The CDFW website and authorized retailers both sell them, and your guide can tell you exactly which pieces you need.
