Bass Fishing in New Jersey

New Jersey packs an outsized amount of fishing into a small state. Drive an hour and you can go from a trout stream in the Highlands to a party boat drifting for fluke. Lake Hopatcong holds largemouth bass, walleye, and musky; the Delaware River gives up smallmouth and panfish along its riffles and eddies. The northern trout streams reward a quiet approach and a well-placed fly, and the local guides who work them know every current seam and hidden pool by heart.

The coast is where the state earns its reputation. Raritan Bay, Barnegat Bay, and the back bays behind Cape May are working water: striped bass push through on their spring and fall migrations, and fluke, bluefish, and weakfish keep rods bent through the season. The sheltered bays fish well even when the ocean is lumpy, and much of the best action happens within sight of the beach. Captains sailing out of Point Pleasant Beach, Atlantic City, and Stone Harbor read the tides and follow the bait, and that local knowledge is most of the game.

Offshore is a different animal. Boats out of Cape May, Ocean City, and Brielle run long distances into the Atlantic for bluefin, yellowfin, and albacore tuna, plus mahi-mahi and marlin in the warm months. Closer in, the wrecks and reefs hold black sea bass, cod, and tilefish. These trips demand serious boats and captains who have made the run hundreds of times, the payoff is a fight you'll remember.

What ties it all together is access. A guided day in New Jersey usually means gear, bait, and tackle are handled, you show up and fish.
