Salmon & Steelhead in Illinois

Illinois fishing runs on two very different clocks. Up north, Lake Michigan charters chase trophy salmon and trout within sight of the Chicago skyline; downstate, guides work reservoirs and rivers for bass, crappie, walleye, and catfish. The distance between those two experiences (big-water trolling one weekend, flipping jigs at flooded timber the next), is what makes hiring a guide here worthwhile. Lake Michigan is the headline. Charters run out of Chicago, Waukegan, and the other northern ports after Chinook and Coho salmon, steelhead (rainbow trout), lake trout, and brown trout. Standing on a charter deck with land shrinking behind you, the lake feels closer to an ocean than anything called "inland": downriggers, planer boards, and a captain who has spent years learning where the thermocline puts the fish.

Downstate is where the reservoirs take over. Lake Shelbyville, Rend Lake, and Carlyle Lake have long reputations for largemouth bass, white crappie, and channel catfish, and the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers add strong walleye and sauger fishing to the mix. Guides on these waters trade in specifics: which creek arm warms first in spring, which stump field holds crappie in June, how to present bait when the river's running high. That's the knowledge you're really paying for.
