Salmon & Steelhead in Wisconsin

Wisconsin fishes on two Great Lakes, thousands of inland lakes, and river systems that include the Wisconsin River flowages and the Mississippi itself. That spread of water supports musky, walleye, bass, northern pike, and a full slate of trout and salmon, and a guide culture built around each of them. Deep-water charter captains, backwater river rats, and northwoods musky specialists all work the same state, often within a couple hours of each other.

The Great Lakes side of the equation runs like a saltwater operation. Charters out of Milwaukee, Port Washington, and Sturgeon Bay troll Lake Michigan for Chinook and Coho salmon, brown trout, and lake trout: deep-water work that takes downriggers, electronics, and a captain who knows where the bait went. Up north, Lake Superior's Chequamegon Bay has a reputation for trophy smallmouth bass and northern pike, with lake trout and salmon in the mix. Inland is where Wisconsin's mythology lives. The Lake Winnebago system is a walleye factory, strongest during the spring and fall runs. The Mississippi, along the western border, gives up walleye, sauger, and panfish to guides out of La Crosse and Prairie du Chien who know their way through its braided backwaters and main channels.

Then there's the Driftless. Southwest Wisconsin's spring-fed streams thread through valleys the glaciers skipped, and they hold wild brown and brook trout that demand quiet feet and good drifts.
