Trout Fishing in Missouri

Missouri fishing starts in the Ozarks. Table Rock Lake, Lake of the Ozarks, and Bull Shoals Lake anchor a reservoir system where largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass thrive on healthy forage and decades of steady conservation work, with crappie and catfish filling out the roster. These are big, structure-heavy lakes, and the fish relate to timber, ledges, and brush that visiting anglers rarely find on their own, which is where a guide's years on the water pay for themselves.

Away from the impoundments, the rivers do their own thing. The Current and Eleven Point Rivers (the Current protected within the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, the Eleven Point a national wild and scenic river), are float-fishing water, smallmouth bass and goggle-eye from a drifting boat, gravel bars and bluffs sliding past. On the other end of the scale, the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers and their tributaries run big, muddy, and full of trophy catfish, paddlefish, and rough fish. Then there's the trout. Lake Taneycomo, chilled by releases from Table Rock Dam, holds rainbow and brown trout in nutrient-rich water that grows them large, a nationally known tailwater fishery where guides drift-fish or work flies over fish that see a lot of anglers and eat anyway. Missouri's four trout parks (Montauk, Bennett Spring, Maramec Spring, and Roaring River), add accessible, heavily productive water for both catch-and-keep and catch-and-release, each with its own quirks a guide can decode. Between the lakes, the rivers, and the cold water, something in Missouri is fishing well every month of the year.
