Know before you go in New Jersey
Federal permits, lotteries and timed-entry reservations in New Jersey, from Recreation.gov.
Confirm current requirements with the agency that sets them before your trip. Rules and fees change every season.
New Jersey Fishing License
Residents ages 16 through 69 and all non-residents 16 and older must possess a valid New Jersey fishing license to fish in fresh waters; resident anglers 70 and over are exempt. For saltwater fishing from a for-hire vessel, clients are covered by the boat's enrollment in the New Jersey Saltwater Recreational Registry and don't need to register individually, but it is always best to confirm with your guide.
Federal Saltwater Angler Registry
New Jersey operates its own free Saltwater Recreational Registry, and enrolling in it satisfies the federal (NOAA/NMFS) registration requirement. When fishing with a licensed guide or charter, clients are covered under the vessel's enrollment in that program and do not need to register individually.
Size and Bag Limits
New Jersey enforces strict size and bag limits for various species in both freshwater and saltwater to promote conservation. These regulations can change seasonally. Guided fishing trips operate under these regulations, and your guide will ensure compliance, providing information on what can be legally kept.
Boater Education Requirement
While New Jersey requires a Boating Safety Certificate for operating a power vessel on state waters, this requirement applies to the operator of the vessel. As a client on a guided fishing trip, you are not required to possess this certificate, as the licensed guide or charter captain will be operating the boat.
