About Utah

Utah's fishing splits between two kinds of country: high mountain water and big desert reservoirs. The Uinta Mountains hold hundreds of alpine lakes and streams where native cutthroat trout still rise, while the Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam runs cold and fish-heavy enough to have earned a worldwide reputation. Red rock canyon in the south, forested peaks in the north, the backdrop changes constantly, and guides here run both fly-fishing and conventional-tackle trips across all of it.

The roster of headline waters is long. Strawberry Reservoir grows trophy kokanee salmon and cutthroat trout. Lake Powell fills its drowned canyons with striped bass and smallmouth. The Provo River tests anglers with educated brown trout, and Bear Lake holds its odd, wonderful Bonneville cisco alongside trophy lake trout. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources manages the lot, and the fish populations show it, this is water that gets looked after.

The strongest argument for a guide in Utah is reach. Much of the best water is remote or subtle enough that a first-timer would drive past it, and a working guide reads river structure and seasonal fish behavior the way most of us read road signs. Drift a boat over big browns, hike into brook trout country in the high lakes, or run a powerboat after schooling stripers, pick the trip, and there's a guide who has made it a specialty. Beginners get taught; veterans get pushed to better water.

Utah Fishing License
Anyone 12 years of age or older must possess a valid Utah fishing license to fish in the state's waters. Licenses are required for both residents and non-residents and are available in various durations, including annual, 3-day, and 7-day options. Specific licenses may be required for certain species or waters.
Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Requirements
Boaters, including those on guided trips, must be aware of Utah's Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) regulations. All boats launching in Utah waters are subject to inspection and decontamination, especially if they have been in waters outside of Utah or in infested waters within the state. Guides typically handle boat compliance, but anglers should be aware.
Catch Limits and Regulations
Utah has specific catch and possession limits, as well as size restrictions, for various fish species and waters. These regulations are detailed in the current Utah Fishing Guidebook, which is updated annually. Anglers must familiarize themselves with these rules, and guides will ensure compliance during trips.

01What species can I expect to catch on a guided fishing trip in Utah?

All freshwater, and a deep bench of it: rainbow, brown, cutthroat, brook, and lake trout, plus kokanee salmon, striped bass, smallmouth bass, walleye, and perch. The mix depends entirely on which water you fish and when.

02Do I need a fishing license for a guided trip in Utah?

Yes, every angler 12 and older needs a valid Utah fishing license, and your guide can't supply one. Buy it online or from an authorized vendor before the trip and the paperwork is done.

03What should I bring on a guided fishing trip in Utah?

The guide typically covers the fishing gear. You cover your license, layered clothing, a hat, polarized sunglasses, sunscreen, and any medications. If you have waders or a fly rod you love, ask the guide, many are happy to have you fish your own.

04Are guided fishing trips in Utah suitable for beginners?

Very much so. A guide teaches casting, fish handling, and the local techniques in real time, on real fish, the fastest education in angling there is. Beginners routinely out-fish their expectations on guided trips, which is rather the point.

05What is the best time of year for guided fishing in Utah?

Depends on the fish. Spring and fall are the river and reservoir trout windows; summer opens the high country and turns on the kokanee and warm-water species; winter means ice fishing. Tell a guide what you want to catch and they'll tell you when to come.
