Fly Fishing in California

Over 1,100 miles of coastline on one side, the Sierra Nevada on the other, and a sprawl of rivers, lakes, and reservoirs in between, California asks only what kind of fishing you want. Guided trips run the full spread: tuna offshore from San Diego, wild trout on a fly rod in the Eastern Sierra, striped bass in the maze of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The freshwater map alone could fill a season. High-altitude Sierra lakes and rivers (the Truckee, the Owens), carry a reputation among fly anglers for wild trout. Salt water raises the stakes. Southern California's offshore fleet chases Yellowfin Tuna, Bluefin Tuna, Dorado, and Yellowtail, running to the Channel Islands and beyond when the fish demand it. Closer in, bay and nearshore guides work San Francisco Bay, Monterey Bay, and the kelp forests off Orange County for California Halibut, Calico Bass, Rockfish, and Lingcod. Whatever your appetite for open ocean, there's a charter sized to it.

A guide earns their fee in California by cutting through complexity, the ecosystems are varied and the regulations are famously intricate. They bring the specialized gear, the live bait, and the hard-won knowledge of where fish were yesterday and where they'll be tomorrow. First-timers get a real introduction; veterans get put on water they'd never crack alone.
