Fly Fishing in Kentucky

Kentucky built its fishing reputation on bass and crappie, and the west end of the state shows why. Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley together form one of the largest man-made lake systems in the world: enough water to lose yourself in for a lifetime, thick with largemouth, smallmouth, crappie, and catfish. Head east and the character changes: Lake Cumberland and Dale Hollow Lake run deep and clear, legendary water for striped bass and smallmouth that pull like they mean it. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources manages all of it, and the fishing holds up in every season.

The rivers carry their own weight. The Ohio, running the length of Kentucky's northern border, holds sauger, catfish, and bass, and fishing big river current is its own craft. Below Lake Cumberland, the Cumberland River turns into something else entirely: a world-class trout tailwater, cold and oxygen-rich, where guides work rainbow and brown trout on fly rods and spinning gear alike. The Green River, in its wilder stretches, gives up smallmouth and muskie to anglers who like their water quiet. No two of these fisheries ask for the same approach.
