Fly Fishing in Oklahoma

Oklahoma fishes bigger than people expect. Lake Eufaula, the largest lake in the state, and Grand Lake O' the Cherokees anchor the eastern reservoir country with largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish. Down on the Texas line, Lake Texoma has built a national reputation on landlocked striped bass, fish that hit like they have somewhere to be. The state changes character as you drive it. The Ozark foothills of the northeast hold clear water: the Illinois River runs cool enough for smallmouth bass and, in designated stretches, trout. Head west and the country flattens into flood-control reservoir territory: Lake Hefner sits right at Oklahoma City's edge, Lake Murray waits in the south, and both give up hybrid striped bass, saugeye, and channel catfish. Something is biting somewhere in Oklahoma every month of the year.

What a local guide sells is time saved. They know which brush piles the crappie stacked in last week, which points the bass are using, where the stripers pushed bait at dawn. They handle the regulations, run a safe boat, and put you on techniques (jigging, deep cranking, live bait under the birds), that would take seasons to learn on your own.
