Ice Fishing in Utah

Utah's fishing splits between two kinds of country: high mountain water and big desert reservoirs. The Uinta Mountains hold hundreds of alpine lakes and streams where native cutthroat trout still rise, while the Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam runs cold and fish-heavy enough to have earned a worldwide reputation. Red rock canyon in the south, forested peaks in the north, the backdrop changes constantly, and guides here run both fly-fishing and conventional-tackle trips across all of it.

The roster of headline waters is long. Strawberry Reservoir grows trophy kokanee salmon and cutthroat trout. Lake Powell fills its drowned canyons with striped bass and smallmouth. The Provo River tests anglers with educated brown trout, and Bear Lake holds its odd, wonderful Bonneville cisco alongside trophy lake trout. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources manages the lot, and the fish populations show it, this is water that gets looked after.

The strongest argument for a guide in Utah is reach. Much of the best water is remote or subtle enough that a first-timer would drive past it, and a working guide reads river structure and seasonal fish behavior the way most of us read road signs. Drift a boat over big browns, hike into brook trout country in the high lakes, or run a powerboat after schooling stripers, pick the trip, and there's a guide who has made it a specialty. Beginners get taught; veterans get pushed to better water.
