Inshore Fishing in Alaska

Salmon run up Alaska's rivers by the millions, and halibut the size of barn doors hold in the cold water off its coast. That is the whole pitch. Freshwater rivers carry Pacific salmon and rainbow trout; saltwater bays hold halibut and lingcod. Anglers fly out to remote lodges from the tundra country of Bristol Bay or run offshore from coastal towns like Homer, Seward, and Ketchikan, with the Chugach Mountains standing over much of it. The scale is hard to overstate, and local guides know which week matters on which river, that knowledge is what you're buying.

Start with the Kenai Peninsula in Southcentral Alaska. The Kenai River carries some of the largest King Salmon runs anywhere, and guided trips work the river for salmon through the summer, with Dolly Varden and rainbow trout waiting in the clear tributaries. Down the road in Homer, charter boats push out into Kachemak Bay and Cook Inlet after Pacific halibut, fish that can get genuinely enormous, plus rockfish and cod. One peninsula, two completely different days on the water.

Southeast Alaska fishes differently. This is temperate rainforest country, a maze of islands and fjords where the protected inside passages stay calm enough to fish when the open ocean won't cooperate. Charters out of Sitka and Juneau target all five Pacific salmon (King, Sockeye, Coho, Pink, and Chum), along with halibut and bottomfish. Fly-out trips reach remote streams for steelhead and cutthroat trout, sometimes with a glacier hanging in the background while you cast.

Then there's the far end of the spectrum: Southwest Alaska and the Bristol Bay watershed, where the salmon runs are staggering and the rainbow trout grow fat on the eggs. Getting there usually means a float plane. What waits on the other side is a river with no road to it and wild rainbows that eat like they've never seen a fly before. These trips are the deep end of Alaskan fishing: remote, expensive to reach, and the reason the state guards its watersheds the way it does.
