Inshore Fishing in Delaware

Delaware runs deeper than its size suggests. The Delaware Bay pours a huge estuary system into the state's lap, the Atlantic sits right off its southern beaches, and freshwater rivers like the Nanticoke and Brandywine Creek hold bass and panfish in between. Nothing is far from anything else here, you can pick a fishery in the morning and be on it before the coffee's cold, which is exactly what makes it a strong base for guided trips.

The saltwater action centers on Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, and Bethany Beach, where bay water meets ocean. Inshore captains work Indian River Inlet and Roosevelt Inlet for striped bass, flounder, and tautog, timing the tides that funnel bait through. Nearshore boats stay within sight of the beach and still find bluefish, croaker, and sea trout. The seasonal runs through these waters are the engine of the whole fishery, when they're on, they're on.

Bigger ambitions head east. Offshore charters out of Lewes (and Ocean City, Maryland, an easy reach from southern Delaware), run to the canyons in the warm months for tuna, mahi-mahi, and marlin. Back inland, freshwater guides work the Nanticoke, the Broadkill, and ponds scattered across the state for largemouth bass, pickerel, and crappie. It's quiet water, good for fly rods or conventional tackle, and the guides who fish it daily know where the fish live.

A guide is the difference between fishing Delaware and guessing at it. The marsh systems that hold red drum are a maze; the artificial reefs stacked with sea bass don't announce themselves; the migratory timing shifts year to year. Local captains carry all of that in their heads, along with the right gear and the right bait for the day. Novices get a working education; veterans get put on fish faster.
