Offshore charter fishing, also called bluewater or deep-sea fishing, targets pelagic species in open ocean beyond the continental shelf. The American offshore industry is concentrated along the Gulf Coast (Venice, Louisiana; Destin and Pensacola, Florida; Port Aransas, Texas), the South Atlantic (Hatteras, North Carolina; Charleston, South Carolina; Jupiter, Florida), the Pacific (San Diego, California; Ilwaco, Washington), and the Hawaiian Islands. Target species include yellowfin tuna, blue and white marlin, sailfish, mahi-mahi, wahoo, swordfish, and the various reef and bottom species fished on shallower offshore grounds. A licensed offshore captain brings the boat, typically a center-console or sportfisherman ranging from 28 to 65 feet, plus Coast Guard safety certification, fuel for runs of 30 to 100 miles, and the bait, tackle, and gaff/leader work essential to landing bluewater fish. Trips run from half-day inshore-offshore mixed runs to multi-day overnight tuna and swordfish expeditions. Live tracking and SOS protocols are particularly critical for offshore operators given the distance from shore and the time-sensitive nature of marine emergencies.
