Guided salmon and steelhead fishing operates in three distinct geographic theaters. The Pacific Northwest, meaning Washington, Oregon, and northern California, supports drift boat and jet sled guided trips for chinook, coho, and steelhead on the Columbia, Sandy, Rogue, Klamath, and Trinity rivers. Alaska's sport fishery is its own category, with king salmon and silver guided trips running on the Kenai, Naknek, and Nushagak from June through September. The third theater is the Great Lakes, where Lake Michigan and Lake Ontario tributaries support a guided industry built on stocked chinook, coho, and the wild steelhead that have established themselves over decades. Tributaries from Wisconsin through Michigan, New York, and Pennsylvania run guided drift boat and wading trips through the spawning runs. A guided salmon or steelhead trip provides the heavy-action rods rigged for current conditions, knowledge of which holding water is producing, and on jet boat operations the access to remote canyon water unreachable by other craft. Trip formats range from half-day eggs-and-bobber trips for novice anglers to multi-day swung-fly steelhead camps on remote Olympic Peninsula rivers.
