Inshore fishing covers the saltwater fisheries inside coastal estuaries, sounds, bays, and the surf zone, water that is generally accessible to small skiffs and shallow-draft flats boats. The Gulf Coast inshore industry runs from Texas (redfish and speckled trout in the Laguna Madre and Galveston Bay), through Louisiana's vast marsh complex (the world's most productive redfish fishery), Mississippi and Alabama, and into Florida (snook, redfish, tarpon, and trout in the Indian River Lagoon, Charlotte Harbor, and Tampa Bay). Atlantic Coast inshore guides target striped bass, bluefish, and false albacore in New England estuaries, redfish and trout through the Carolinas, and tarpon along the Florida flats. A guided inshore trip provides a poling skiff, bay boat, or flats boat suited to the water depth, lifejackets and safety equipment, rigged spinning or fly tackle, and a captain who navigates the marsh, oyster bars, and seagrass flats where the fish actually hold. Trip lengths range from half-day morning charters to multi-day tarpon hunts during peak migration.
